AFL AwFuL Neglect
Gloves
It was typical of the AFL to do nothing when gloves first came on the scene.
At a time when a decision needed to be made the silence emanating from the AFL was
deafening. They were probably busy appointing a woman to the tribunal or some other
facile pursuit.
Surely the AFL is aware that American games are not worth watching because of all the
equipment the players are permitted to use. Outfielders in baseball use a glove
which is about 60cm long and they never drop a catch. I could make baseball worth
watching in an instant by banning gloves for outfielders.
Is this where we're heading?
If FINA (International Swimming Federation) had acted in outlawing swimming costumes
which gave a competitor an unfair advantage AT THE VERY START we would not have the
dilemma we have today.
If I had my way, gloves would be banned from Aussie Rules and be allowed only with a
medical certificate as with helmets.
At the very least, a glove wearing player should be forced to kick with the glove on.
If he wins a free kick or mark wearing a glove(s) then he must kick wearing the glove(s).
As soon as a player, with a free kick, starts to tug at his glove, to remove it, the umpire
should be instructed to call "play on".
