AFL AwFuL Rules:
Kicking in Danger
In essence this rule is commendable and anyone who remembers the old
saying "If the ball's got ears kick it harder" would be grateful for its introduction.
However, in its inimitable style, the AFL has gone too far.
Soccering, with NO follow through, should be allowed in most circumstances because it would
eliminate many of the "rolling malls" we witness today. A short jab with the boot can set
the ball flying.
More soccering - less congestion.
In earlier times, when the ball fell into congested space after an inneffective ruck contest,
someone would soccer the ball towards their goal and clear the area. Today about six pairs of
hands reach for the ball and the winner is rewarded by immediately being tackled by an
opponent or two, AND a teamate necessitating another bounce-down.
The AFL has contributed to an increase in congested play by enforcing this rule as it has.
No rule changes are required, just a little commonsense by the umpires.
Well, for a few weeks at least.
